Brunswick @ Greely (Varsity) - W 4-0 (Game Photos)
Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Family Ice Center
The Greely Lady Rangers kicked off the new season with a resounding victory over last year's round one playoff foe, the Brunswick Dragons. Brunswick is a tough and talented team, but was no match for this year's deep Greely bench.
Senior Dani Cyr notched the first tally, assisted by freshman defensive phenom, Becca Otley. Senior Kim Darling kept the momentum going with a blazing wrister from the point, assisted by Cyr. In the second period Becca Otley went end to end, past the Brunswick defense, and scored unassisted on a beautiful deke move. The rout was on with Junior Emily Scannel's first goal of the season, assisted Shannon Dellert.
Junior goalie Kate Otley frustrated the Dragons with yet another outstanding performance, as evidenced by Brunswick's eight penalties (including a major fighting and game misconduct).
With a powerful veteran lineup and boatload of new talent, it appears that
Greely fans are in for a very exciting season!
Final Score: Greely 4, Brunswick 0

Yarmouth @ Greely
(Varsity) - W 4-0 (Game Photos)
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at Family Ice Center
The Lady Rangers hosted an under-manned Yarmouth team Thursday night at Family Ice, and came away with their second win in as many games.
Greely got on the board early, with a terrific unassisted goal by Junior Sarah Mynahan. Phoebe Harris followed shortly thereafter with a wrister from the left slot that just cleared the Yarmouth goalie's outstretched pad on the short side. Senior Chloe Shields, fresh off the Greely Drama stage, got her first assist of the season. With her game legs back, Shields then followed with a goal of her own, assisted by Junior Emily Scannell and Harris.
The Rangers put the game away in the second with a nice high snap shot from just outside the crease by Dani Cyr, who was following up a Griffin Gorsky shot. Lucy Schmid also got an assist on the play.
The biggest challenge for Goalie Kate Otley was staying
awake, as Yarmouth managed few shots in the contest. The Greely fans did get a
scare late in the game on a Yarmouth breakaway, but Otley made a fantastic save
to preserve the shutout.
Final Score: Greely 4, Yarmouth 0

Greely @ NYA (Varsity) - L 1-0
Thursday, December 7, 2006 at North Yarmouth Academy
The unbeaten Lady Rangers traveled to a cold and uninviting NYA for a highly anticipated matchup against the top-ranked Panthers. NYA disposed of Greely easily in last year's playoffs, and the Rangers were out to prove that they could skate with the best.
The contest was a clean, fast-paced defensive battle. For two full periods the Rangers, led by a strong defense and outstanding goaltending, kept the Panthers at bay. Greely saw few scoring opportunities, but also kept the shots against Kate Otley within reason through hard work and desire. Late in the third period, NYA finally broke through on a wrap-around, with KO tied up by a crowd in the crease.
Although the game will go down in the "L" column, this game
was a victory in many respects. We will see NYA again, and they will be very
afraid.
Final Score: Greely 0, NYA 1

Greely @ Winthrop (Varsity) - W 4-1
Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Kents Hill
The Rangers traveled to Kents Hill to take on a tough Winthrop team. After losing a heartbreaker to NYA, Greely was clearly seeking redemption. Becca Otley kicked it off early in the first with a beautiful end-to-end effort culminating in a searing wrister from the right slot. Withrop evened the score two minutes later, and it looked like the Rangers would have their hands full. Dani Cyr put Greely back on top in the second, assisted by Sarah Mynahan.
Chloe Shields got the insurance goal in the third, assisted by Phoebe
Harris. Emily Scannell put it out of reach five minutes later, assisted by
Becca Otley. The defense did an outstanding job of keeping the powerful
Kayla Kimball (#17) in check, and the Rangers came away with another
convincing victory.
Final Score: Greely 4, Winthrop 1

Greely @ Cheverus (Varsity) - W 2-0
Saturday, December 11, 2006 at Cumberland County Civic Center
The Lady Rangers took to the big stage of the Cumberland County Civic Center for a matchup against a young but talented Cheverus team. The play was fairly even for the first period, with both teams getting a few scoring chances. But “Steel Curtain” Kate Otley was determined to blank the Stags, especially with old Cumberland friends Molly and Gracie Fitzpatrick taking their best shots.
Greely finally broke the stalemate midway through the second period, with yet another tremendous individual effort from Becca Otley. The freshman defenseman fought her way along the right boards, somehow maintained control of the puck, and slipped an off-speed shot through the five-hole from the right circle.
Dani Cyr followed nine minutes later with a gritty play at the blue line as Cheverus defenders did their best to strip her of the puck. With her back to the net, Dani reached back and retrieved the puck from the crowd, then whirled around and carried it in for the score. Greely controlled the play from there, for another convincing victory.
Final Score: Greely 2, Cheverus 0

Winslow @ Greely (Varsity) - L 1-0
(Game Photos)
Saturday, December 16, 2006 at North Yarmouth Academy
A very tough Winslow team invaded the Travis Roy Arena to take on the Lady Rangers. Last year, in their first meeting, Winslow dominated a very good Greely team. This time around, the matchup was a lot more even, but the result was the same.
Greely was unable to generate much offense, and while Kate Otley put up her usual stalwart effort, Winslow’s Beth Fisher broke through near the end of the second period for the game’s only score.
Final Score: Winslow 1, Greely 0

Greely @ Cape (Varsity) - W 2-0
Saturday, December 18, 2006 at Cumberland County Civic Center
The Lady Rangers took on arch-rival Cape Elizabeth under the bright lights of the Big House. Although the crowd was slightly smaller than that of a typical Pirates game, an enthusiastic group of parents, siblings and friends took an hour off from Christmas shopping to cheer on their favorite hockey team.
The contest was clean but spirited, as evidenced by the eleven penalties (6 for Cape, 5 for Greely). The first period saw plenty of action but no scoring, as the Cape goalie thwarted the Greely attack competently. Dani Cyr broke the tie two minutes into the second, however, with another fine unassisted effort. Becca Otley followed (also unassisted) with five minutes left in the period, and that seemed to take the wind out of the Capers. Kate Otley turned away 13 shots in the contest.
Final Score: Greely 2, Cape 0

Falmouth @ Greely (Varsity) - W 2-0
(Game Photos)
Monday, January 1, 2007 at Family Ice Center
Family Ice Center was the setting for the highly anticipated Dudley Cup, an annual face-off between all the teams from the Falmouth and Greely programs. The all-day event brings lots of fans from both communities, and is sure to perpetuate the fierce rivalry for many years to come.
Within minutes, it was clear that the Greely girls’ program is farther along in the development process. Greely dominated the game, putting 28 shots on net versus Falmouth’s 5. Sarah Mynahan got things going midway through the first period, assisted by Bianca Bowden. Rachel Storey notched an insurance goal in the second, assisted by the hustling Sarah Mynahan once again.
We wish the Falmouth girls the very best as they seek more support from their school and community.
Final Score: Greely 2, Falmouth 0

Waterville @ Greely (Varsity) - L 2-1
Monday, January 8, 2007 at Family Ice Center
The Lady Rangers welcomed a new opponent to their house, and the Panthers of Waterville lived up to their city’s reputation as a hockey power. Chloe Shields got the home team on the board first, mid-way through the second period. But Waterville evened it up just 30 seconds later, and continued to carry the play, putting 20 shots on net to Greely’s 12. Waterville went ahead midway through the third period, and prevailed in the end despite a flurry of opportunities during two late Greely power plays.
Final Score: Waterville 2, Greely 1

Winthrop/Maranacook @ Greely (Varsity) - W 2-1 (Game Photos)
Monday, January 10, 2007 at Family Ice Center
Greely hosted the always tough Winthrop/Maranacook team, and wasted little time taking advantage of home ice. Emily Scannell got the Rangers on the board five minutes into the first period, when she stopped a clearing pass at the blue line and took it in to the bottom of the circle. From there, she let a bad angle shot go that miraculously found its way into the net. Greely kept up the pressure in the second period except for two short lapses where KO had to come up big. Chloe Shields got an insurance goal five minutes into the second period, off a nice rush and pass from Dani.
Winthrop stepped it up in the third period and things got a little scrambly at times - but again KO held the fort. The Rangers were able to neutralize the dominant Kayla Kimball for most of the game, but she made a nice rush with a teammate, and somehow managed to elude Emily and Becca with a nice fake pass in the crease. KO came off the post and Kayla tucked it in the short side. Shots were fairly even in this up-tempo game, with 15 for Greely and 13 for Winthrop. The Rangers will look to boost the shot production as they head into the thick of the schedule.
Final Score: Greely 2, Winthrop 1

St. Doms @ Greely (Varsity) - L 0-4 (Game Photos)
Saturday, January 20, 2007 at North Yarmouth Academy
St. Dom’s, the top-ranked team in the division, came to a frosty Travis Roy arena for a weekend face-off against the Lady Rangers, who hadn’t practiced in ten days. The lack of practice may have contributed to a little rust, but Greely’s opponent was simply at a different level.
St. Dom’s got out to an early and commanding lead, with two goals in the fourth minute of play. The Greely defense stiffened in the second, but the Rangers were simply unable to generate much offense against a tough St. Dom’s defense. One exception was Brittany Ames’ brilliant and gritty rush up the length of the ice, evading multiple defenders and finishing with a shot.
St. Dom’s put it away in the third with one goal at 4:08. Britanny Michaud, St. Dom’s imposing captain, completed her hat trick at 11:47 of the third. KO performed admirably, turning away 15 of 19 shots; but Greely’s 4 paled in comparison.
Final Score: St. Doms 4, Greely 0

Greely @ Brunswick (Varsity) - W 7-1
Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at Dayton Arena
Following a tough loss to St. Dom’s, the Rangers entered the hallowed halls of Bowdoin’s Alfond Arena eager for redemption. With Brunswick in a rebuilding phase this year, the Rangers got what they were looking for.
Greely dominated in every phase of the contest. Dani Cyr led off with two first period goals, assisted by Becca Otley and Kim Darling. Greely continued to pour on the offense in the second. Phoebe Harris scored twice, assisted by Sarah Mynahan and rising freshman Melanie Howland. Cyr completed her hat trick (unassisted), and up-and-coming Brittany Ames notched her second goal of the season late in the period, assisted by Jamie Moody.
In the third, Coach Hawkins took the opportunity to stress puck control and
passing, giving the Brunswick netminder a breather. But Ames couldn’t resist,
scoring Greely’s seventh and final goal with help from Shannon Dellert. Kate
Otley turned away 12 of Brunswick’s 13 shots, losing the shutout mid-way through
the third. All in all, this was a much-needed ego boost for the Rangers.
Final Score: Greely 7, Brunswick 1

NYA @ Greely (Varsity) L 0-7
Wednesday, January 31, 2007, Family Ice Center
The NYA Panthers must have gotten a good scare
from Greely after the season’s first contest (a close 1-0 NYA victory). This
time around they left nothing to chance, keeping their first line in for double
shifts in order to run up the score against an outmatched Greely team. NYA
scored 2 in the first, 2 in the second, and 3 in the third, outshooting Greely
34 to 4.
KO did her best, but Greely
couldn’t muster much offense at all, resulting in an overwhelming barrage on the
Greely net. The Lady Rangers displayed great sportsmanship, however, taking only
one penalty to NYA’s three. On to the next one…
Final Score: Greely 0, NYA 7

Greely @ Winslow (Varsity) W 3-2
Saturday, February 3, 2007, Sukee Arena
Still licking their wounds from the NYA drubbing, the Lady Rangers traveled to Sukee Arena on a cold Saturday afternoon for another daunting matchup against 3rd place Winslow.
Phoebe Harris put the Rangers out front midway through the first, getting some help from a deflection off a Winslow defenseman’s skate. Winslow broke through the Greely defense for two quick scores toward the end of the period, however, setting an ominous tone heading into the second.
Greely kept up the intensity though, and Emily Scannell evened the score midway through the second, assisted by Jamie Moody. The contest was hard fought all the way, with a total of ten penalties and a lengthy time out for a Winslow injury. Dani Cyr put the Rangers on top with a gritty score six minutes into the third, crashing the net and somehow getting a stick on a loose puck. From there, the Greely offense kept up the pressure while KO saved the game with several spectacular saves on Winslow breakaways.
Greely showed they were up to the task on this day, and put
the world on notice that they will be a force to be reckoned with come playoff
time.
Final Score: Greely 3, Winslow 2

Greely @ St. Dom’s (Varsity) L 3-0
Thursday, February 8, 2007, Le Colisee
Still riding high from a huge win over Winslow, the Rangers hit the big stage of the Colisee on a cold Thursday night to face the powerful St. Dom’s team. With Dani Cyr unavailable, it looked to be an uphill battle - but the Rangers did a respectable job of keeping it close.
St. Dom’s scored midway through the first, but the Greely defense stiffened,
with Jordan Moody, Emily Scannell, Rachel Storey and Becca Otley playing
extremely well. St. Dom’s finally broke through again at 6:51 of the second, but
the Rangers did not give up, moving the puck well throughout the contest. As has
been the case so often this season, Kate Otley’s outstanding goaltending was
evident even in a loss, with Greely being outshot by a 26 to 12 margin. St.
Dom’s put it away in the third, but the fact that the Rangers were able to skate
with this powerful adversary even without their number one offensive weapon
provided a big boost of confidence for the playoffs, where anything can happen.
Final Score: Greely 0, St. Dom's 3

Cape Elizabeth @ Greely (Varsity) W
4-2
Saturday, February 10, 2007, Family Ice Center
Greely hosted perennial rival Cape Elizabeth for a Saturday night special, and the Rangers did not disappoint the many fans on hand at FIC. Statistically, the Rangers dominated - but this was a hard-fought and chippy battle requiring one of Greely’s better efforts.
Emily Scannell, who has been a force all over the ice all season long, set the tone by putting the Rangers on the board four minutes into the game. Cape got the quick equalizer two minutes later, but Dani Cyr notched the go-ahead just before the end of the period.
Cape tied it again early in the second period, but Cyr – playing her second
game of the day - didn’t allow Cape any sense of comfort, putting Greely out
front for good a short time later. Brittany Ames, who is showing constant
improvement and a nose for the net, got the insurance goal with two minutes left
in the second. KO and the Greely defense shut the door in the third, and Greely
held on for a convincing victory.
Final Score: Greely 4, Cape Elizabeth 2

Greely @ Waterville/Oakland (Varsity) W
3-2
Wednesday, February 14, 2007 (make-up), Sukee Arena
The Rangers traveled to Sukee arena for a make-up game against the Waterville/Oakland Panthers. Waterville has a proud history as a hockey powerhouse, and although the girls program is young, they have shown that they plan to extend the town’s reputation to the female side of the ledger.
Greely struck first, on an Emily Scannell unassisted goal late in the first period. The action went back and forth until midway through the second, when Kim Darling added to Greely’s lead, assisted by Phoebe Harris. Despite the score, Waterville/Oakland had many more scoring opportunities, and finally got on the board late in the second.
The third period was a dramatic one, with the Panthers erasing Greely’s lead
three minutes in. Waterville dominated offensively, outshooting Greely 30-16
through the contest. But Greely made its opportunities count, as speedy freshman
Melanie Howland notched her first goal of the season with just two minutes left
in the game. KO shut the door, and Greely escaped Sukee arena with a special
Valentine’s Day gift.
Final Score: Greely 3, Waterville/Oakland 2

Cheverus @ Greely (Varsity) L 4-0
Thursday, February 15, 2007, Family Ice Center
This has certainly been a season of ups and downs for the Lady Rangers. On this night, the warm glow of the Waterville win faded quickly as a vastly improved Cheverus team looked like they had something to prove.
Old friend and neighbor Grace Fitzpatrick made her statement midway through the first period as her high wrist shot deflected off a Greely stick and past KO’s shoulder. Cheverus kept the momentum with a second goal just a minute later, and the air seemed to come out of the Greely sail. Cheverus put the game out of reach early in the second, and added insult to injury midway through the third.
The stingy Cheverus defense, led by the Fitzpatrick Sisters, allowed only
eight Greely shots on goal, to Cheverus’ 22. Molly Fitzpatrick showed supreme
talent, skating and shooting at will all evening while frustrating Dani Cyr’s
best efforts. KO’s only solace was that she did not allow old buddy Molly to
beat her, despite numerous attempts.
Final Score: Greely 0, Cheverus 4
