Nov 27 Scrimmage with St Doms at TRA Pictures
The Lady Rangers posted their second pre-season win tonight against the Saints in a rematch from the semi-final rounds last season. Megan Martelle scored the Lone Ranger goal on a great pass across the crease from Lela Hull mid-way through the first period, and the Rangers held off the Saints for the remainder of the game to post the win. The Saints juggled some lines and applied some serious pressure in the second and third period, outshooting the Rangers by a 17 to 10 margin. Kate Otley looked very strong in net for the win. Kim Darling even got into the act and made a great helmet save on a shot from the point.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Dec 02 Home Game vs. Cheverus at FIC W 3-0 Pictures Here
Our Lovely Lady Rangers opened the season with a win against the Cheverus Lady Stags, posting a 3-0 score. The Lady Rangers opened the scoring at 10:26 of the first period with a goal from Lela Hull assisted by Kate Shavel and Leah Swan. Megan Martelle scored her first of two goals at 11:34 of the first period, unassisted. Megan scored again at 5:03 of the third period with an assist from Leah Swan. This was Cheverus's first game in their first year, so all the girls were very excited. It was great to see some Cumberland Girls from Cheverus on the ice also, such as Molly Fitzpatrick and Goalie Elizabeth Snyder.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Dec 12 Away Game vs. Cony at KIA Augusta W 3-2 (no pix)
Our Ladies pulled off the victory today in our first win over Cony EVER. It was satisfying for our Ladies as Cony ended our season last year in the playoffs at Gorham. But this was a different story as our Ladies battled the Cony ghosts and pulled out the victory.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Dec 16 Home Game vs. St. Dominic at FIC Falmouth Loss 2-3 Pictures Here
The Fighting Lady Rangers played tough but lost a very close game to the marauding St Dominic Saints here at our home ice at FIC. The Lady Rangers opened up the scoring very early in the first period (before I was ready with the camera) on a memorable play. Our Ladies had control of the puck and Leah Swan received a pass at the right point. Leah let a wristshot rip but it was headed slightly wide to the left of the net. Annabelle had perfect positioning behind the defense on the left wing several feet in front of the goalie and deftly tipped the shot into the net. The goalie and the Saints were stunned. The place went nuts, and even the St. Dom parents were applauding. It was great, and I wish that I had video. The balance of the game was pretty evenly played. St. Doms first goal resulted from a scrum in from of our KateO, and their second goal was the result of an individual effort from St. Dom #13 as she picked of a pass on her blue line and rushed in on KateO all alone (see the pix). A nice goal, but KateO almost got it. We had several chances toward the end of the game, and Coach Hawkins pulled KateO with 40 seconds remaining for an extra skater. Overall, a very nice game in this rubber match against the Saints. We are 1-1 against the Saints so far this year, and we meet again on Jan 19 in Lewiston at the Colisse (formerly Central Maine Civic Center).

December 18, Home game vs. Fryeburg Tier 2 at TRA W 5-1 Pictures Here
Our Lovely Ladies faced off against the Fryeburg Raiders at Travis Roy Arena. Our Ladies worked up a quick lead and then coach juggled the lines. Goals were scored by Leah, Chloe, Annabelle, Chloe, and Lucy. Assists were from Abby, Molly and Kim. This was a really fun game as our newer skaters really worked hard and owned the ice. Allie was outstanding, with her end-to-end hustle. Bianca narrowly missed scoring her first goal on a shot in traffic from the bottom right circle (see pix), as the shot just missed the far corner.

December 30 Game 6 vs. Deering at FIC W 7-1 Pictures Here
Our Lady Rangers overpowered the Deering Rams tonight, as the Ranger energy was fueled by our Freshman and Sophomores. It was also a night of several firsts, as both Abby and Hanna scored their first goals as Lady Rangers. Hanna scored twice; it was really awesome! Lela led off the scoring with a unassisted goal. Hanna followed up with her first goal, assisted by Emily and Phoebe. Megan scored the third goal, assisted by Lela and Kim. Phoebe scored the fourth goal with an assist by Hanna and Leah. Abby scored her first goal, unassisted, ending the scoring in the first period. Coach Hawkins juggled the lines for the second period. Hanna scored her second goal in the second period, unassisted. Leah wrapped up the scoring in the third period, assisted by Lucy. Jordan made nine saves, with a lot of them challenging shots by Alicia and Bronwyn, in close. The Rangers managed 20 shots on the Deering goaltender.

January 1, 2005 Game 7 vs. Falmouth at the Dudley cup at FIC W 5-2 Pictures Here
Our Lady Rangers came out shooting, as they outplayed Falmouth to a 5-2 win. Greely owned the rink from the start and held pressure for the entire game outshooting the Yachtsman by 40 to 8. Rachael Hallet (C) of Falmouth opened up the scoring with the first shot on net with a excellent single-handed effort at 1:19 of the first period. Annabelle Knight responded 1:50 later in a nice scoring play assisted by Jordan Moody. Emily Scannell scored the first of her two goals at 8:04 of the first period assisted by Megan Martelle. The first period ended with Greely up 2-1 with a 14-2 shot advantage. Rachael tied the score with her second goal for Falmouth at 5:42 of the second period, assisted by Caroline Libby and Mary Grygiel. From that point all the scoring was from Greely. Emily and Megan combined for their second combo at 11:37 of the second period. The second period ended with the score of 3-2 for Greely with the shots at 27-5. Greely came out skating in the third period and Jenna Pickett scored just 23 seconds into the period, assisted by Lela Hull. Lela scored the final goal of the game at 5:49 of the third period on an assist from Kate Shavel. This was a very heads-up goal; Kate hit Lela with a nice pass as Falmouth broke for a line change. Lela had one girl to beat and deke'd around her to come in on the goalie alone.
Greely passed and moved the puck very well, keeping the puck in the Falmouth end for most of the game. Another excellent Ranger effort, and a wonderful way to spend time on New Years Day!

January 8, 2005 Game 8 vs. Winthrop at Kents Hill W 2-0 Pictures Here
The Greely Lady Rangers traveled to the luxurious Alfond Center at Kents Hill and won a close game against a strong Winthrop team by the score of 2-0. KateO was terrific in net and was tested several times; she even had the post rung three times. I don't have the game sheet yet, so I'm not sure of shots on net, but my guess is that they outshot us by a very narrow margin, maybe 25 to 22. Megan got the first and game-winning goal. Abby got the second goal. I'll add more when I get the game sheet.

January 22, 2005 Game 12 vs. Winthrop at FIC Tie 3 -3 Pictures Here
Wow, this game had some exciting moments. We faced a motivated Winthrop team, complete with a couple of loud parents, #17 on defense, and battled the Winthrop Ramblers on the ice to a 3-3 tie. Probably the biggest event of the game was our very first penalty shot awarded to Greely, as a result of the Winthrop defender covering the puck in the crease. Coach Hawkins had to select one of the players on the ice at the time and picked Senior Co-Captain Molly Hamel to take the shot. There was a little confusion with the Winthrop goalie as the referee had to explain the rules, which call for the goalie to remain in the crease until the attacker touches the puck at center ice. Molly had good speed, did everything right and got the goalie to commit early and go down on her pads. Molly stick handled around the goalie for a backhand, only to have the puck just slip off her stick as she was making the shot.
KateO made some great saves on #17, who had a number of breakaways and hard shots from the point. Both teams had 18 shots on net. Greely goals were scored by Kate S, Emily, and Annabelle, with assists by Annabelle, Jenna and Lela.

January 25, 2005 Game 13 vs. NYA at TRA L 1-3 Pictures Here
Well, our Ladies broke the series of recent ties, however Lucky Jan 13 proved a bad omen as our Ladies dropped a close one to the Panthers of NYA. Kate S broke open the game with a spectacular breakaway goal (see pix) and we were up by one goal. Our Ladies stepped it up, played very hard, and had their chances with some quality shots and several breakaways but were denied any further goals by a strong NYA defense. NYA outshot us by 20 to 7. Meintel and the rest of the NYA family pressed hard with some great passing plays in the second and third periods. They had some fantastic opportunities down low, but our KateO denied all the familiar faces and made some great stops. All the NYA goals were low grinding goals on the third and fourth rebounds. The second NYA goal was on the fourth or fifth rebound and squirted free to an open NYA skater hanging on the far post. Zoe Filliter poked a third or fourth rebound in past KateO's toe in the third period for the last goal of the game.
Coach pulled KateO for an extra skater with 1:13 left in the game, but NYA bottled up the play in the neutral zone and our end until the buzzer.

January 27, 2005 Game 14 vs. Cony at FIC W 5-0 No Pictures
Wow. Our Ladies continued the building excitement with a great game against a tough, very physical team. This game was notable for a couple of reasons; first and most importantly, it was Cony!; KateO earned her fourth shutout; Kate S got her first Greely hat trick, and; the team played well and really hustled. The Lady Rangers kept the pressure on the Cony team throughout the game and were a constant offensive threat.
Kate S had a bunch of chances before she got her first goal, as she had two breakaways where she was stopped by the Cony goalie. After that, Kate got a rare natural hat trick. (FYI, a "natural hat trick" is a hat trick in which three goals are scored in succession by one player in one game.) Coach almost risked the 1:30 bench penalty by tossing his Montana State hat onto the ice. Everyone played very well against Cony, who seemed to get more physical as the game wore on. Abby got absolutely decked to the ice with a high check from Cony, who drew a 1:30 checking penalty. The Rangers got called for some penalties also, as Hanna and a Cony skater crashed with Hanna getting the call for checking. Jordan had some excellent physical play fighting for the puck along the boards and won the puck in some key plays.
Cony was able to bottle up the Rangers several times and threw the puck toward the net, grinding the play in front of KateO. KatO really had to work to earn her shutout. An example occurred midway through the first period where KateO had made a stop only to have a rebound squirt loose for another shot. KateO made the stop on the rebound with the tape ball on the butt of her stick after which the defense quickly cleared the puck. The fans got behind Kate and during the second period, as we heard a Ranger contingent in the stands cheering, "We've got Otley, we've got Otley...."
Another exciting part of the game was where the Cony coach pulled the goalie with 6:05 left in the game. Cony appeared desperate to not be shutout, and was willing to risk an empty net very early. Cony did mount some excellent pressure and kept the puck in the Ranger end, but eventually the Lady Rangers broke the puck out and Emily scampered down the ice for an empty netter.
Greely outshot Cony by a 35-13 margin. Greely penalties to Jenna and Hanna for checking and Jordan for slashing.
Wow, two in a row against Cony. Nice!

January 31, 2005 Game 16 vs. Scarborough Tier 2 at FIC Win 2-1 Pictures Here
Our Lady Rangers pulled out a close one over the Scarborough Red Storm. Actually the Rangers had to throw a storm of shots on the Scarborough goalie to pull out the victory. Sara played the Rangers tough and made 49 saves. Scarborough led off with a goal at 6:30 of the first period with an unassisted goal by #11 Eliza Timpson. KateO made a couple of nice saves in a scrum at the crease and Eliza whacked a loose puck at the left post after what seemed an eternity without a whistle. The ref commented to Nate, that there wasn't a whistle because he could see the loose puck the whole time. At the end of the first period Greely had outshot the Storm by a 15-2 margin. Abby tied the score at 2:42 of the second period with assists by Katie L and Annabelle, as she broke in and put a puck 5-hole on Sara. Greely outshot Scarborough by a 18-1 margin in the second period. Hanna earned the game winning goal (see pix) by slipping a puck under Sara's glove at 4:16 of the third period, with an assist from Chloe and Phoebe. Greely outshot Scarborough in the third period 18-1, for a game total of shots Greely Rangers 51 - Red Storm 4.

February 3, 2005 Game 17 vs. Cape Elizabeth at CCCC L 0-3 Pictures
Our Ladies came out a little flat this game against the Capers at the Cumberland County Civic Center, and were never able to put a score on the board. The Capers had Crystal Brooks back in net and Sadie Werner on defense in this rematch game and the Capers were looking to avenge their earlier loss to the Rangers. Cape got on the board first with a unassisted goal from Maureen Kertes at 8:10 of the first period, and it proved to be the only goal they would need. Sadie Werner rounded out the rest of the scoring, starting with the first of her two goals at 10:12 of the second period, unassisted. Her second goal was at 2:17 of the third period, assisted by Libby Courrier.

February 11, 2005 Game 18 vs. Yarmouth at TRA W 5-0 No Pictures
Our Ladies played with a short bench tonight vs. a Tier 2 Yarmouth team and pulled away with a 5-0 victory. It was a night for the Freshman and Sophomore offense as they were able to showcase their skills in a game were they dominated the Yarmouth team. The game had everything; great hustle, great plays, another KateO SO, and fevered cheering from the stands. What more do you need?
Jordan opened up the scoring with a sneaky shot from the right point that
found its way to the twine at 8:00 of the first period. Our lovely Ladies
outshot the Yarmouth team 14-1 in the first period. Katie Leyden scored her
first career goal at 1:55 of the second period assisted by Chloe. Chloe
had the initial shot and the rebound landed on the left side of the crease were
Katie had positioned herself and she scored on a quick shot. Katie had a
couple of other chances as well, and put the puck on net several times
throughout the game. Greely and Yarmouth tied for shots in the second
period, 7-7. Several of the Yarmouth shots were tough tests for KateO;
especially the nice glove save on a close shot from Nicole Simmonds.
Greely pulled away in the third period as they scored three more times.
Chloe scored at 1:42 of the third on an assist by Katie L and Leah. The
second goal of the third was a single-handed effort by Kate S as she broke in
and scored on Betsey at 7:45 of the third. Abby scored on a really nice
one-timer high to the glove side on a pass from Katie and Bianca. Greely
outshot Yarmouth in the third period by a 10-2 margin for a game total of
31-10.

February 17, 2005 Game 20 vs. Falmouth at FIC L4-3 Pictures
This was a heart-breaker as the Ladies skated even until 12.3 seconds left in the game when Rachel Hallet scored her second goal of the game with another single-handed effort to pull out a win.
Greely opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal by Molly with a slapper
from the left point just 1:40 into the game. I didn't get to see where it
hit the net, as I had the camera on Molly for the shot (see the pix-sorry it
came out a little blurry) Greely went ahead by the score of 2-0 on a goal by Kate S, as
she picked off a clearing pass and broke in on net all alone at 3:45 of the
first period (see pix). The photo is interesting as it shows a Falmouth
defender driving Kate on top of the Falmouth goalie, Kelly Morris (see the photo
series). Falmouth got on the board on a breakaway by Katrina Costa at 7:23
of the first period. Falmouth blocked a shot from the Greely D and Rachel
picked up the bouncing puck outside the Falmouth end and hit Katrina with a pass
who and broke it down for the score. Katrina tied the game just one minute
later on a similar situation. (see pix)
Falmouth went ahead in at 9:53 of
the second period in another breakaway on a redirected Greely shot from the
point, as Rachel Hallet jumped on a puck and raced down for the score.
Abby scored at 4:00 of the third period on a rebound from a shot by Emily.
Rachael sealed Greelys' fate with just 12.3 seconds left in the game on a quick
shot that went off KateO and the goalpost. I'm not sure, but I think that
this was the first Falmouth Girls hockey win over Greely. Great effort by
both teams.

February 19, 2005 Game 21 vs. Biddeford at TRA W 3-2 No Pictures Yet
The Ladies pulled out a very important 2-1 win as we get ready for our rubber match against NYA and prepare for the Final Tournament. This was a very close game, but Greely had a slight advantage until late in the third period. Greely had outskated the Tigers / Freeze and led in shots by an 11-3 margin, until the end of the third period where Biddeford really poured it on and pulled their goalie.
Greely went up 1-0 at 11:08 of the first
period on a great scoring effort by Senior Megan, assisted by Annabelle and
Molly. The Greely girls had been controlling the puck in the Biddeford
end, Molly kept the puck in the zone along the left D and moved the puck up to
Annabelle for a pass to Megan, who wristed a hard shot into the net. Biddeford tied
the game at 4:03 of the second period on an unassisted effort by Jullian
Martines. Greely pulled ahead mid-way through the third period as Abby hit
Emily with a perfect pass and Emily just drilled it past the goalie for the GWG.
Our ladies held off a late push from Biddeford in the last minutes, as Biddeford
pulled their goalie with under two minutes remaining. The pressure was
intense and Greely protected the net very well, but was unable to clear the
puck. As a result, Biddeford was unable to get many quality shots. Greely was able to clear
the puck and Kate S tried for the open net, and missed by a few inches.
This resulted in an icing call and a face off to KatO's right side. All
the Biddeford skaters lined up on the right side in front of the net, resembling
an on-side kick in football. The Freezes' first face off resulted in
another KatO save, and the second face-off was won by Greely, who had possession
until time expired. Wow, nice finish and effort to all the
players. Bring on NYA!!

February 24, 2005 Game 22 vs. NYA at TRA L 2-7 Pictures are here
Our Ladies ran into a tough NYA team this afternoon and feel behind early. NYA scored first at 2:48 with an unassisted goal by Rhegan Flanagan. Becca Gerber scored at 4:47 assisted by Emily Darby and Alecia Tocci. Greely got on the board at 6:42 with a goal by Kate Shavel, assisted by Phobe Harris. NYA scored at 6:04 with a goal by Cumberlands' Zoe Filliter, assisted by island-girl Kim Morse. Kate Shavel scored again at 6:49 of the second period to bring Greely within a goal. NYA answered at 9:47. All the scoring after that was from NYA as they had three unanswered goals to pull away to a 7-2 win. The game was closer than the score, but the NYA defense was very strong and broke-up a lot of our scoring drives. Emily picked up the only penalty of the game in the second period, 1:30 for tripping. NYA outshot us 22-12.

February 24, 2005 Game 23 vs. Cheverus at FIC W 4-0 Click here for Pictures.
Our Ladies dominated the Cheverus Lady Stags in our second game of the afternoon this vacation Thursday. The Rangers were over their loss to NYA earlier and were ready for another game. Our Ladies skated the first period to a 0-0 tie, outshooting Cheverus 8-0. Greely applied more pressure in the second period and opened up the scoring at 3:15 with an unassisted goal by Molly, who was playing up on center for this game. Greely scored again at 7:00 of the period with a goal by Leah Swan, assisted by Allie and Chloe. (see pix). Greely outshot the Stags by a 10-2 margin. Annabelle got two goals in the second period, as she exploded out of her brief scoring slump, with a goal at 4:11 and another at 6:56 assisted by Kate L, Kim and Molly. Greely outshot the Stags by a total of 30-10.

Our Ladies played our last regular season game on the "big ice" at USM and skated to a 2-0 shutout victory against a scrappy Stag squad. Greely had an edge in play throughout the game, which was helped by the 5 Stag penalties. Emily opened up the scoring at 7:06 of the second period with her 9th goal of the season on the powerplay with an assist by Jenna. Jenna made it 2-0 at 5:50 of the third period assisted by Abby. Greely received two penalties; Jordan for roughing, and Abby for tripping. This was KateO's 7th shutout of the season. I'm not sure, but I think that is a Greely Girls record.
