York gained a
measure of revenge for last year’s last-second Western Class B quarterfinal
loss by scoring three third-period goals to come from behind and beat the
Rangers 4-2 at Biddeford Ice Arena. Greely goalie Billy Bolduc was the
difference in the first period making 22 saves, many of the spectacular variety,
to keep the game scoreless. Sam Sheldon scored on a 45-foot slapshot to put the
Rangers up 1-0 midway through the first period. Brad Allen’s power-play goal
with an assist from Tyler King put Greely in front 2-1 just 40 seconds into the
third period.

29 - Alumni Game - Varsity
9, Greely Alumni 9
The varsity spotted the alumni a four-goal lead in the first half, stormed back
to take a two-goal advantage midway through the second stanza and looked like
they might hold on for their first victory in years over the alumni. But with
less than two minutes left, Phil Sharp (Class of ‘92) popped in his first goal
of the evening to knot the game at 9-all. Sharp was one of 22 former Greely
players to suit up for an alumni squad that included Matt Jones, Andrew Higgins,
Mark Baumer, Elliot Bates, Jared Powers, Gus Laughlin, Nick Adams, Sean McKay,
Andrew Bisbing, Steve Saucier, Jason Bisbing, Steve Williams, John Dillman, Chad
Mack, Matt Martelle, John Carolan, Kyle Bassett, Todd Sharp, Jesse Blais, Andrew
Bradford, Todd Hatch and Tim Duffy.

Greely Vs Fryeburg at FIC
W 10-0 Pictures
Here
Sam Wilcox scored a hat trick and the Rangers poured 72 shots on the Raiders'
net in a 10-0 victory over the team that defeated Greely in last year¹s Western
Maine Class B Regional Final. Ben Daigle, Brad Allen and Harrison Sheldon scored
twice each while freshman Andrew Beckmann tallied his first varsity goal in the
Rangers' regular-season home opener played at FIC. The Raiders managed just 11
shots on net.

Fryeburg hockey team well aware it´s a whole new season
Staff Writer Rachel Lenzi (Complete article at http://sports.mainetoday.com/highschool/stry.html?id=0501130158)
Greely led 8-0 after the second period, and Fryeburg declined the option of playing the third with the clock running. "I don't think it's a great night for anybody when someone wins, 10-0," Greely Coach Barry Mothes said. Was it retribution for Fryeburg's controversial championship last season? "Last year was last year," Mothes said. "They had really phenomenal players last year who made a tremendous impact. "But this wasn't about that. It's a new year. We just needed to come out and play well."
Things have not been easy for the Fryeburg hockey program since the Raiders won the state championship last March. In the weeks following the win, the Maine Principals´ Association investigated the program following accusations that the school had recruited three players from New Brunswick. After the investigation, the MPA placed the program on probation for one year. Then, graduation hit and several other players departed, including goalie Joe Mango, who now attends Deering. Now, the Raiders are 0-5 and preparing for the second half of a long season. "Western B is probably the top conference, and it´s difficult to compete when you´re playing eight or nine kids," Capacietti said.
WATCH OUT: Peter Gustavson and the Falmouth hockey team could only laugh after the fact. Seconds after Gustavson scored his first goal Saturday in a 5-4 loss to Cheverus, a big, silver gutted fish came flying out of a corner at Family Ice Arena and landed just inside the faceoff circle to the right of Cheverus goalie John Spring. The fish toss has long been a tradition began at the University of New Hampshire, where a fan would toss a fish onto the ice after the Wildcats´ first goal of the game.

Capers stifle Greely for a 4-0 victory
By
RACHEL LENZI Staff Writer
Rautenberg was one of the four different scorers for the Capers, who took 39 shots on Greely goaltender Ben [Billy] Bolduc. The Capers also made up for their lack of discipline by killing off six Rangers power plays. "We moved the puck around really well," Capers defenseman Jeff Croteau said. "We've been staying away from focusing on individual play." Rautenberg picked up the loose puck in the neutral zone and sent a long slap shot from inside the blue line past Bolduc, which immediately gave the Capers a much-needed boost against the Rangers. "It´s always nice to get an early goal," Croteau said. "It gives you the momentum and it puts other teams back on their heels." Capers Coach Jason Tremblay agreed. "Dan got on inside the blue line, took the shot and it caught the goalie off guard," Tremblay said. "It really set the tone."
Despite the fact Cape was penalized six times, and forward Brian Holden was assessed a 10-minute misconduct, the Capers (6-2) continued to thrive short-handed. Tremblay estimates his team's penalty-killing at 94 percent this season, and Cape's 2-0 lead came on a short-handed goal by Holden at 5:07 of the first. "It's been that way all year," Tremblay said. "We've taken too many penalties but (Kyle) Dancause and (Garrett) Currier played incredible on the power play. That's their job and they take it seriously."
Cape goaltender Ryan Hatch (17 saves) stopped Greely's prime chance to cut Cape's first-period lead in half, denying Sam Sheldon on a breakaway with 1:59 left in the first. After that the Capers limited the Rangers (3-3) to five shots in the second period and seven in the third.
Cape peppered Bolduc with shots early in the second, and made itself familiar with Greely´s end of the ice. Drake Livada gave Cape a 3-0 lead on a crossing feed from Mike Kertes at 7:13, one second after a penalty against Greely (too many men on the ice) expired. Hatch shut down the Rangers on several close-range opportunities in the third, including Sheldon´s second breakaway attempt of the game, which Hatch turned away to help kill the Rangers´ fifth power play. "Ryan´s played two solid games since New Year´s," Tremblay said, referring to shutouts of Yarmouth and Greely. "He´s improving day by day."
Joel Balfour completed Cape´s scoring with 2:20 left from Croteau and Rautenberg. "Greely´s always a good test for us," Croteau said. "They had us marked on the schedule but we get the best of every team. They always put a target on us."

January 19, 2005 Greely Vs Scarborough at FIC L 4-6
Greely’s Pat Fogg scored a hat trick and linemate Nick Spaulding netted his first regular-season goal, but that wasn’t enough to overcome a five-goal outburst from Scarborough’s Ben Tsijura as the Red Storm bested the Rangers 6-4. Fogg’s second goal of the game with just over two minutes left in the second period provided the Rangers their third one-goal lead of the contest and a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period. But Scarborough scored four unanswered goals in just over eight minutes of the third frame, with Tsijura striking for three of those.

only goal of the second period when his shot from the top of the zone deflected off a defender and by goalie Kyle O'Connor on a power-play at
6:34. Sheldon wristed a shot from the left circle over O'Connor's glove 50 seconds into the third period to make it 2-0. Pat Fogg scored the final goal

Sam and Harrison Sheldon scored two goals apiece and Ben Daigle picked up a pair of assists as Greely moved its record over the .500 mark (5-4) with a
6-1 win over Gorham at USM. Harrison Sheldon netted the game¹s first goal on a nifty move in front of the net after being sent in alone on passes from
Colin Filliter and Sam Blais. Gorham tied it later in the first period. Sam Sheldon and Daigle combined on both second-period goals, giving the Rangers
a 3-1 edge heading into the final period. Pat Fogg, Drew Bowden and Harrison Sheldon tallied in the third period. Greely netminder Billy Bolduc had 19
saves.

Pressure now off Wildcats
By Jay Pinsonnault
jpinsonnault@seacoastonline.com
All good things must come to an end and the dream of an undefeated regular season for the York High School hockey team came to an end Saturday at Travis Roy Arena in Falmouth.
The Wildcats won their first 15 regular-season games before dropping a 3-2 decision to Greely on Saturday.
"We outhit them, we outskated them and we outplayed them, the only thing we didn’t do was outscore them," York head coach Mike Vessey said.
Greely goalie Bill Bolduc turned away 30 shots. Senior Tom Ohlson scored both Wildcat goals.
"As of late we’ve been getting some pretty good goaltenders," Vessey said. "Bill Bolduc did a great job that night. We dominated them in the first period, the majority of the second and all of the third. We had a couple of minor defensive lapses that cost us. It was a good game."
Vessey said the team is still very confident about its chances in the upcoming tournament.
"The kids were heartbroken after the game," Vessey said. "It took them a long time to get dressed, but two days after the game I think there was some lightning. It’s tough to carry the pressure of an undefeated season and we don’t have that pressure anymore. We’re looking at this loss as a positive for our team. Now, we’re just going to go out and play hockey and not be playing hockey and defending an undefeated season."
York gets back on the ice today at 4:15 p.m. against Cape Elizabeth and will close the regular season Sunday at the Biddeford Ice Arena against Leavitt.
The Wildcats have a bye for the first two rounds and will play in the Western Maine Class B semifinals on Saturday, March 5 at the Portland Ice Arena. The regional final is slated for March 9 with the state championship on March 12.

PLAYOFF GAME February 28 vs
Leavitt at FIC
W 3-0 Pictures Here
Game Summary by Peter Blais
Tonight’s Western Class B quarterfinal match-up between No. 3 Greely (9-7-1) and No. 6 Leavitt (6-10) continues what has been an excellent rivalry this season.
The Hornets led 3-1 heading into the final period of the Jan. 29 game at Auburn. But Greely, thanks to Sam Sheldon’s third-period natural hat trick and Pat Fogg’s game-winner midway through the closing stanza, rallied for a 5-3 come-from-behind victory.
A week later, the Rangers converted five of six power-play opportunities, building a 5-1 lead against the Hornets at Falmouth. The Hornets scored twice to cut the lead in half with more than four minutes remaining to play and forcing Greely to hold on for a 6-3 triumph. Fogg scored twice, while Sheldon, Brad Allen, Nick Spaulding and Tyler King tallied one apiece for the home team.
The Hornets’ record is a bit deceiving. Among Leavitt’s 10 losses are tight contests against Eastern Maine Class B top gun Winslow (3-2), Cape Elizabeth (4-3) and York (3-1). Leavitt received sterling efforts this season from senior goalie Kenny Gauthier, junior center Justin Rouillard and sophomore wing Evan Longchamps, according to Head Coach Fern Racine.
Greely comes into the playoffs a bit banged up. Senior defenseman Ben Daigle suffered a deep cut in Monday’s regular-season finale against Falmouth and is expected to miss tonight’s game. Sophomore blueliner Michael Saucier, who recently returned from a back injury, could see some additional playing time in the defensive rotation.
The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the Western Class B semifinals Saturday, March 5 at Portland Ice Arena.
First Period -- 1, Greely, King (Fogg, Allen) 13:57.
Second Period -- 2, Greely, Fogg (unassisted) 9:36.
Third Period -- 3, Greely, Allen (Spaulding) 14:33.
Goalies -- Greely, Bolduc (30 shots - 30 saves)
Leavitt, Gauthier (33 shots - 30 saves)

PLAYOFF GAME
March 6th vs York at the Portland
Ice Arena W 5-4
Rachel Lenzi Portland Press Herald
Greely faces No. 1 Cape Elizabeth for the regional champion- ship at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Colisee in Lewiston.
King, parked at the crease, took a feed from behind the net from Sam Sheldon and one-timed a shot past York goalie Matt Fulmer (26 saves). "Last night, I had this dream and I was hoping we´d come back with one second left," King said. "I dreamed about it ... and it happened." But it was hard to tell what was more remarkable, King´s foresight or the fact that the Rangers (11-7-1) tied the game up with one second remaining in regulation on Fogg´s long shot, which skidded by Fulmer to force overtime.
It was a moment reminiscent of last year´s playoff matchup between York and Greely, when Andy Bisbing scored with one second left in regulation to give the Rangers a 5-4 win in the Western B quarterfinals. "Amazing things can happen when you keep fighting," Greely Coach Barry Mothes said.
The Wildcats (15-3) spotted Greely a 2-0 lead in the second period, on goals by Alec Calder at 2:22 and Colin Filliter at 3:36. But after Calder (tripping) and Sheldon (unsportsmanlike conduct) were penalized at 7:04, York took to the offensive on a two-man advantage. York put nine shots on Greely goalie Bill Bolduc (39 saves) before Tom Ohlson scored with eight seconds left on the 5-on-3 power play to cut Greely´s lead in half.
York tied the game at 2-2 with 1:53 left in the second on Chris Powers´ goal, and took a 3-2 lead 43 seconds into the third on Ohlson´s second goal. The Wildcats appeared to seal the win at 12:05 on a power-play goal by Tim Berrigan, but Greely went to work in the final 1:10. "Obviously, when it´s 4-2 with a minute-and-something left, it´s a different situation in hockey," Mothes said. "One of the things we say to each other is to believe. We believe. We say that every period. It´s believing you can get two goals in a minute-fifteen or whatever." Nick Spaulding´s goal with 1:10 left in the game sparked the final push by the Rangers. Fogg´s goal at 14:59 forced overtime.
In overtime, Mothes simply told his team to keep shooting. "I said to the team, ´we´ve got to keep the shifts short and throw the puck on net whenever we get the chance,"´ Mothes said. "Three times we´ve scored a goal with a second left to tie or win a game. And it´s one of the more amazing things I´ve ever seen."

PLAYOFF GAME March 9th vs
Cape Elizabeth at the Colissee L 2-4
Rachel Lenzi Portland Press Herald
"The crowd explodes and I said to the team, ´The quickest way back is to go out and get one'" Cape Coach Jason Tremblay said. "Dan hits the post and I said, ´Come on!´ "We don´t panic. We´re composed. Sometimes we don´t look it but we are." Gibson finally put Tremblay and the Capers, the top seed in the regional tournament, at some ease. Still, the Capers´ spot in Saturday´s state championship game wasn´t final until the horn sounded at the Colisee.
"(The final four minutes) was pretty nerve-wracking," said Gibson, who tipped in Pat Kertes´ initial shot for the goal. "They came back against York . . . and we knew we had to play good, defensive hockey."
Trailing 3-2, Greely goalie Bill Bolduc was [pulled] with under a minute left in favor of a sixth skater, and Rautenberg´s empty-net goal at 14:46 sealed it, Rautenberg´s goal snuffed any hopes of a second late-game comeback by Greely in four days. Greely rallied Saturday for a 5-4 win in overtime against York in the semifinals. "Four minutes is quite a lot of time in a hockey game," Greely Coach Barry Mothes said. "We´re trying to play it shift to shift and keep it short, and we tried to focus on a shot and another shot and got a goal. And that gave us a great lift on the bench. "Next shift, Cape came hard and we kind of got back on our heels in the defensive zone."
Cape took a 1-0 lead at 10:08 of the first when Mike Kertes sent an easy backhand shot from about 20 feet that seemed to float above the rising arm of Bolduc. Until then the Capers had thrown everything they had at him, putting 14 shots on goal before Kertes scored. Cape outshot the third-seeded Rangers 22-4 in the first, but the score easily could have been 4-0 except for Bolduc´s quick reflexes and the gritty Greely defense, which cleared several rebounds from out of the crease. Cape goalie Ryan Hatch (15 saves) made two critical stops about 4 1/2 minutes into the second on Greely´s 2-on-1. Hatch stopped an initial shot by Sam Sheldon, then pushed away the rebound by Brad Allen with his stick, preserving Cape´s 1-0 lead. Rautenberg scored Cape´s second goal at 12:48 of the second, a power-play goal off a wrist shot from the circle to Bolduc´s right. But with 19 seconds left in the second, Ben Daigle answered with a power-play goal for the Rangers (11-8-1) that cut Cape´s lead back to one entering the third. Bolduc, coming off a 39-save performance against York, finished with 49 saves against the Capers.
Cape Elizabeth (19-2) will face Winslow (17-4-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Colisee for the state championship.
